moisturizing sunrise mask as I'd like to call it |
I learnt how to build my skincare routine from my mother (I wrote a post about her routine awhile back). The first time doing it, it felt like doing chores to me, washing face before going to bed when all I want to do was to rush to bed. To top it off, I got overwhelmed with many product choices out there and going through trial and error because making decision is kind of a horror for a Libra (right? or just me?). So how did I go from feeling rushed to loving my skincare routine so (too) much?
I first felt the need to use facial products when I finally entered my puberty. My acne started to pop out. It was not cystic every time, more like sore-to-touch under-the-skin pimple that takes a very long time to heal. The hardest thing to get rid of was also the blackheads and whiteheads which I get them on a daily basis. I used to spend so long in my vanity looking closely at my imperfections and then being horrified by every small detail that I could find. That's how my obsession with skincare began for the sake of correcting my skin. Even then when my skin situation started to alleviate, I would find another flaw to not be happy with again, and then more products.
Over and over, that would play in my head as I look at myself in the mirror, flaw after flaw, which does not make skincare enjoyable and it also lets down self-confidence.
I also wrote a post on having a gentle care for the skin which reflected my thoughts in the past in the subject of self-care. I am glad that I have passed that obsession period now and this is when I truly start to appreciate the minimal products that I have by elevating the experience. Almost everyday, I try to make the routine to feel relaxing and sensorial. However much time I have, I will do it, and I will make that routine the best routine possible. I know time is an essence but we do not need 15 minutes all the time to make it good. We can just try to create a habit of making conscious and soft movement when we cleanse, smelling and playing with all the oils and creams when we moisturize by inhaling and exhaling deeply, and that is when I become in love.
My day and night routine serves a different purpose. The day routine is sort of a reward to me as I do it after I get up early to pray before sunrise, to cook and eat breakfast and to do some self-reflection on my journal. PS: Not everyday lives up to my dream morning, and that is okay. This day routine just gets me prepared to start the day, so it is consists of very simple and protecting products. Cleanse, Moisturize, Sunscreen. The night routine on the other hand, I love to do it in a dim light. This really helps me to enjoy the experience a lot more, light a candle maybe, and I guarantee I cannot see all the small details in the mirror I used to obsess with before, ha! It is really the best.
For me personally, skincare routine is as much as it is about paying attention to the skin, protecting it and nourishing it, while also being a powerful act of self-care. The hardest thing about skincare is finding products that works for each one of our unique individual skin. Once we find it, we would love the rhythm of the routine and it would be less of a chores.
As per video, this is the recipe for my favorite moisturizing sunrise mask:
one teaspoonful of any face balm you have (I use Yay For Earth)
one teaspoonful of raw organic honey
10 - 15 drops of a nourishing oil such as avocado oil / jojoba (I use SW Basics Oil Serum)
The idea is to use whatever we have in the cabinet to create something that is suitable to what the skin craves. I have a face balm, a honey and a nourishing oil 💡 in hand. The mixture is not gooey, it slathers on smooth and thick. I have to take it off with a soft facial cloth (such as the one from JSS) as it is not easy to rinse and I do it with lukewarm water instead of warm. After I take it off, I'm pleasantly surprised that my skin does not feel tacky as there is honey, instead it is supple and moist! I do not mind it having a bit of moisture left behind since my skin is on the dehydrated spectrum. I will list the product ingredients below in case you have something similar in the cabinet! 😊
Yay For Earth: Organic Olive Oil, Local Beeswax, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil
SW Basics Oil Serum: Organic Avocado Oil, Organic Geranium Oil, Organic Tumeric Oil, Organic Coffee Oil

food for thought: how do you start and end your day? what do you think about elevated skincare routine and what are ways that you could do to elevate it?
